Chapter Ten: Thomas

Tuesday night, I went to the gym with David. We did our usual workout and even managed to go a couple of ounces over our threshold. I guessed that was the way everything in life worked.

After the showers we grabbed a table at the little café that was inside the gym. I had my usual chicken and avocado sandwich and that slimy green juice the barista promised would help me build my muscles again.

David said that he broke up with his girlfriend. “She was driving me crazy. She is the same age as I am, but if she didn’t get her way, she could throw a temper tantrum that would outdo any two-year-old. Then she would just sit and pout. It got to the point where I wanted to piss her off just so she would give me the silent treatment.”

I choked back a laugh. He gave me a dirty look, and then laughed as well.

“Why did you stay with her so long if she was driving you that crazy?” I asked him.

“She gave great blowjobs. What can I say? But it got to the point where wasn’t even worth staying in the relationship for that.” Then he got serious. “To be honest, there were a lot of great things about her, especially at the beginning of our relationship. But then she got very clingy and possessive. She had to know where I was all hours of every day. She was always asking me if any female students were flirting with me. She refused to give me room to breathe.”

“Did you talk to her about it?”

“I did. Several times. She always said she would change. And things would get better for a little while. But then after that, it seems like she was worse than ever before.”

I nodded. I understood where he was coming from. I’d had that problem in the past.

David leaned back in his chair with his hands behind his head like he was posing. “I’ll just be the sexy eligible bachelor.”

I laughed. “Are you going to start hitting up those sexy coeds?”

“Not a chance. Not only do I like my job a little too much, but I just got out of a relationship with an immature person. I do not want to have to deal with that again.”

“I feel you there.”

“Speaking of sexy young coeds, how is your relationship with Amanda going?”

“Amazing. Would you believe that I have actually fallen in love with her? I always thought I would be the last person world to fall in love.”

“What are you going to do about the job issue?” he asked me. He knew how much I enjoyed my job.

“I’m going to find a new job. She offered to go elsewhere first, but I figured I would end up getting canned anyway once her old man found out about us.”

“Why? I thought he liked you.”

“He does. At least, he does as an employee. I’m not so sure how much he would like me as the forty-year-old man who has fallen in love with his daughter.
